The Health & Safety Executive reports that almost a quarter of all reportable electrical accidents at work involve portable equipment and that the vast majority caused electric shock.
The Electricity at work Regulations 1989
In these regulations it states that as may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so fas as is reasonably practicable, such danger.
The Provision and Use of work equipment 1998 (PUWER)
PUWER replaces the Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulation 1992 and carried forward these existing requirements with a few changes and additions, for example the inspection of work equipment and specific for mobile work equipment.
In general terms the regulations require that equipment provided for use at work is, suitable for the intended use, safe for use, maintained in a safe condition and in certain circumstances inspected to ensure this remains the case. Any inspection should be carried out by a competent person and a record kept.
The Management of Health & Safety 1999
Requires an employer to implement preventive and protective measures on the basis of general principles of prevention.
